Northeastern State (OK) signed a total of 35 players this off-season that included 18 high school seniors will join 16 transfers that are already on campus Wednesday during the first day of the National Letter of Intent period.
Second-year coach Kenny Evans said is he really excited about the potential of all of the recruits.
“This class of players has us very excited about the future of Northeastern State football,” said Evans. “With the mid-term signees that includes seven former NCAA Division 1 transfers and nine of the top junior colleges players in the four-state area we have added some immediate help.”
Among the 19 freshman signed, 11 are from Oklahoma , seven from Texas and one from Arkansas .
“The 19 young men signed from the high school ranks will be able to step right in and push our older players, but what excites even more is the character and work ethic of the this group with many of them excelling both on the field and in the classroom,” said Evans.
Coach Evans also credits his coaching staff, Matt Hodgson (recruiting coordinator), Charlie Cooper, David Morgan, Marcus Whitmore, Courtney Lattimore, Kyle Woods, John Murray and new coaches Brad Cornelsen and Beau Davidson helped make this a great recruiting class.
The following is a list of all the players that signed a letter of intent at Northeastern State .
Blake Dirteater: DL, 6-0, 245, Coweta , Okla.
Dirteater caused havoc in many offensive backfields in 2008. He earned 5A-4 Defensive MVP award, OCA All-State selection and Oil Bowl participant. As a prep senior, Dirteater collected 95 tackles, 12 sacks and holds the school record for sacks in a game with three. He helped the Tigers and Head Coach Bubba Burcham to four-straight trips to the state playoffs.
Gage Waffle: RB/DB, 5-10, 180, Mannford , Okla.
Waffle was a standout player on both sides of the ball for the Pirates and Head Coach Jason Landrum. He earned Daily Oklahoman Honorable Mention All-State honors as a sophomore and junior while leading the team in tackles. As a senior, Waffle was selected the 4A-2 Running Back of the Year, rushing for 1,112 yards and 10 touchdows.
Nathan Dewberry: LB, 6-1, 175, El Reno , Okla.
Dewberry finished off a successful high school career for the Indians and Head Coach Tom Cobble. He was a two-sport letterman, qualifying for state in wrestling as a freshman and junior while helping the Indians to Dual State titles in 2006 and 2007. On the field, Dewberry led Class 5A in tackles, selected District Player of the Year, El Reno Defensive Player of the Year, chosen to the All-VYPE Football team and an All-State Honorable Mention selection as a senior.
Justin Shelton: DL, 6-1, 295, Claremore , Okla. (Sequoyah HS)
Shelton and the Eagles had a very successful run over the past three seasons. He helped Claremore Sequoyah to a state title in 2006, semi-final appearance in 2007 and runner-up finish in 2008. Shelton collected All-District and All-State accolades as a prep senior finishing with over 100 tackles and eight sacks.
Jacob Morgan: DL, 6-2, 250, Bixby , Okla.
Morgan left his mark on the Spartans football program. He earned many awards during his tenure including Honorable Mention All-State, All-District and All-Metro as a sophomore and junior. Morgan was selected as the Channel 2 Player of the Week as a junior as helped Head Coach Pat McGrew to a state runner-up finish. He shined as a senior picking up All-State, 5A-3 Lineman of the Year, All-Metro and Tulsa World Player of the Week accolades. Morgan finished second on the team in tackles with 105, 25 tackles for loss and 12 sacks.
Johnny Morton: LB, 6-0, 200, Chandler , Okla.
Morton helped the Lions and Head Coach Neal Bacon to a state runner-up finish in 2008. He earned All-District accolades as a senior. Morgan was a two-time state qualifier in track and power lifting.
Jack Gray II: QB/K/LB, 6-1, 220, Chandler , Okla.
A letterman in football and baseball, Gray was the defensive MVP on the Lions baseball team as a freshman and followed as the offensive MVP as a sophomore. As a junior, he earned All-State Honorable Mention honors. Gray thrived as a senior for Head Coach Neal Bacon, he collected All-State accolades at linebacker, 2A-5 MVP, led team to the class 2A title game and was invited to play in the Oil Bowl.
Donald Butler: RB/FS, 5-8, 150, Broken Bow, Okla.
Butler was a three-sport athlete at Broken Bow High School , but thrived on the football team and Head Coach Greg Werner. As a senior, he was voted All-District Offensive Back of the Year, given the pound for pound award and the team offensive MVP.
Jarred Wise: OL, 6-4, 300, Tulsa , Okla. (Union HS)
Wise was big part of the success for the Redskins and Head Coach Kirk Fridrich. The Redskins claimed the 2008 state title and played for the title in 2006 and 2007.
Calen Fulps: QB, 5-9, 160, Broken Arrow , Okla.
Fulps was a three-year starter for the Tigers and Head Coach Ron Lancaster. Prior to his senior campaign, he won both state and national Top Gun Quarterback competitions held over the summer and was named as a player to watch by the Tulsa World. Fulps finished his career as the #2 quarterback in school history in passing yards, completions and touchdowns. He was named to the OCA All-State team.
Ed Coleman: DE, 6-2, 265, Tulsa , Okla. (East Central HS)
Coleman was a big part of the success of the East Central football and basketball teams during his tenure. He was an important part of the Cardinals basketball team run to the state finals as a sophomore. Coleman played only football as a junior and senior for Head Coach Travis Hill. He helped the Cardinals reach the state semi-finals as a junior and was a pre-season All-State selection as a senior.
Aston Hughes: DB, 5-11,170, Denison , Texas
Hughes earned 1st Team All-District and 1st Team All-Texoma as senior for the Yellowjackets and Head Coach Cody White. He also was a All-State Honorable Mention selection.
Kirk Wilson : OL, 5-11, 270, Callisburg , Texas
Wilson was a three-year starter for the Wildcats and Head Coach Jerry Bomar. He earned 2nd Team All-District as a sophomore and junior. Wilson captured 1st Team All-District and All-Area honors as a senior.
Matt McDougald: WR/LB, 5-11, 175, Humble, Texas
McDougald was a two-year starter for the Mustangs and Head Coach Donald McDougald. He earned 2nd Team All-District as a senior and Academic All-District as a junior and senior.
John Stelly: LB/FB, 5-10, Hardin , Texas
Stelly led the Hornets in tackles for three straight seasons averaging over 100 tackles per season. He was a team captain for three years while earning All-District honors on both sides of the ball. Stelly was a 2nd Team All-State selection at running back and linebacker as a senior.
Mike Yoder: OL, 6-5, 280, Kingwood, Texas
Yoder was a two-year starter for the Mustangs while earning 1st Team All-District, Academic All-District and played in the Space City All-Star Game as a senior.
William (Beau) Beane: OL, 6-0, 275, Austin , Texas
Victor Williams: DB, 5-9, 170, The Colony, Texas
Williams recorded 125 tackles, three interceptions and numerous quarterback pressures as a senior for the Cougars and Head Coach Rudy Rangel. He was an All-District, Defensive MVP and Region All-Academic selection. Williams was also on the powerlifting team where he qualified for the regional and state meets as a junior.
Cody Hammer: LB, 5-10, 240, Fayetteville , Ark.
Hammer posted 803 rushing yards, 10 touchdowns, 169 tackles, five sacks and four interceptions as a three-year starter on the Fayetteville High School football team and Head Coach Daryl Patton. He earned an All-Conference selection as a junior and was a pre-season All-State selection as a senior.
John Turner: WR, 5-10, Jr., Garland , Texas (Trinity Valley CC)
Turner comes to Northeastern State after two seasons at Trinity Valley Community College . He caught 43 passes for 420 yards and four touchdowns for the Cardinals. Turner was named All-Conference Honorable Mention SWJCC twice. He plans to major in Criminal Justice.
Patrick Cook: QB, 6-0, 195, Jr., Mont Belvieu, Texas (Trinity Valley CC)
Cook comes to Northeastern State after two seasons at Trinity Valley Community College . He started seven games as a freshman passing for 1,098 yards and 10 touchdowns. As a sophomore, Cook earned 2nd Team All-Conference accolades and was second in the conference in passing and passing efficiency. He is a General Studies major.
La’Ron Elmer: RB, 5-7, 185, Jr., Mesquite , Texas (Kilgore JC)
Elmer comes to Northeastern State after two seasons at Kilgore College where he rushed for 1300 yards and nine touchdowns in two seasons for the Rangers. Elmer plans to major in Health and Kinesiology.
Chris Davis: RB, 5-7, 225, Jr., Troup, Texas (Tyler JC)
Davis comes to Northeastern State from Tyler Junior College where he rushed for 524 yards and 10 touchdowns in two seasons with the Apaches. Davis plans to major in Education.
Darryl Byrd: FS, 6-5, 220, So., Stillmore , Ga. ( Independence CC)
Edward Victorian: WR/KR, 5-8, 160, Jr., New Orleans , La. (Kilgore, JC)
Victorian comes to Northeastern State from Kilgore Junior College where he caught 35 passes for 1, 028 yards and five touchdowns. He earned All-Conference Honorable Mention as a sophomore. Victorian plans to major in Health and Kinesiology.
Delvin Herndon: OL, 6-1, 295, Jr., Troup, Texas (Kilgore JC)
Herndon comes to Northeastern State from Kilgore Junior College where he played two seasons for the Rangers on the offensive line. Herndon played multiple positions on the line and collected 130 career pancake blocks. He plans to major in Health and Kinesiology.
William Pittman: FB, 5-10, 230, DeSoto , Texas (Trinity Valley CC)
Pittman comes to Northeastern State from Trinity Valley Community College where he played two seasons with the Cardinals. A dual threat at fullback, he compiled 19 catches for 165 yards, 19 rushes for 150 yards and was an All-Conference selection as a sophomore. Pittman plans to major in Education.
Rashaad Johnson: S, 6-2, 200, Waco , Texas ( University of Arkansas )
Johnson comes to Northeastern State from the University of Arkansas . He earned a role on special teams as a sophomore making 15 tackles. Johnson had a solid junior year with 53 tackles, two interceptions, three pass break-ups and a forced fumble. He participated in the 2008 Cotton Bowl and 2007 SEC Championship game. Johnson will finish his degree in Health and Physical Education.
LeQuantum McDonald: DE/TE, 6-4, 240, So., Waco , Texas ( Baylor University )
McDonald comes to Northeastern State from Baylor University where he spent two seasons on the sidelines for the Bears. McDonald plans to major in Business.
Brian Johnson: DB, 5-8, 165, So., Garland , Texas (Trinity Valley CC)
Johnson comes to Northeastern State from Trinity Valley Community College where he played two seasons. A standout defensive back, he collected 125 tackles, three interceptions and blocked seven kicks for the Cardinals. Johnson plans to major in Health and Kinesiology.
Chris Johnson: TE, 6-4, So., Miami , Okla. ( University of Central Arkansas )
Johnson comes to Northeastern State from the University of Central Arkansas where he made an immediate impact. He started for the Bears as a freshman, catching six passes and two touchdowns. A three-time All-Conference performer at Miami High School , he earned special team’s player of the year as a senior. Johnson plans to major in Criminal Justice.
Logan Cawyer: TE, 6-4, 255, Jr., Miami , Okla. (Commerce HS) ( Tulsa University )
Cawyer comes to Northeastern State from Tulsa University . He helped the Golden Hurricane to the 2006 Armed Forces Bowl and the 2007 GMAC Bowl and two Conference USA West Division titles. Cawyer played in 14 total games at TU. At Commerce High School, he was an All-District selection four times, District Defensive Player of the twice, and picked up All-State accolades as a senior. Cawyer plans to major in Health and Physical Education.
Billy Blackard: 6-3, 290, DT, Claremore , Okla. ( Oklahoma University )
Blackard was a highly touted player out of high school, Rivals.com ranked him as the #37 best defensive tackle in the country in 2005. He signed with Oklahoma University out of high school and left in the spring of 2007 and will have two seasons with the RiverHawks.
Nick Dobler: S, 6-0, 190, Topeka , Kan. ( Independence CC) ( Kansas State )
Dobler comes to Northeastern State from Kansas State and Independence Community College . He had a successful stint with Pirates collecting All-Conference Honorable Mention as a freshman and 2nd Team All-Conference as sophomore. Dobler was effective in the classroom as well picking up the John C. Pittman Award and All-Conference Academic Team selection as a sophomore. He will major in Health and Kinesiology.
Caom Hansen: DE/LB, 6-3, 250, Mountain Home , Id. ( Boise State ) Sacramento City College )
Hansen comes to Northeastern State from Sacramento City College where he helped the Panthers to the 2008 Mid-Empire Conference Championship. He also was the Big 8 California College Discus Champion in 2008. Hansen collected eight sacks and 11 tackles for loss in two seasons. He plans to major in Psychology and pursue a minor in Education.
