STEPHENVILLE - Tarleton Football welcomed 35 new Texans from various high schools across the state, and one standout from Florida, during National Signing Day today. Tarleton head coach Todd Whitten joined Byron Anderson on the Tarleton Sports Network at TexStar Ford showroom for a special edition of his weekly radio show to discuss his class Wednesday night. "I'm very thankful for our coaching staff and their families for putting up with the long hours and many miles they've traveled over the last few months," said head coach Todd Whitten. "Our coaching staff has put in many hours and I believe that we've brought in a quality group of kids who can help this team win football games.
"We really think this class of kids can be a great addition to our program," he continued. "They are quality students on the field and in the classroom and, most importantly, they could fill some areas of need for our football team."
Here is a look at the newest members of Tarleton Football:
Glen Rose High School:
Two-year starter for Glen Rose … 2017 All-District first team WR … 2017 All-District honorable mention DB … All-Central Texas honorable mention … Blue-Gray All-American Bowl WR … As a senior, recorded 40 catches for 926 yards and 11 touchdowns in 11 games … As a junior, made 14 catches for 269 yards and two touchdowns in eight games.
Coaches say:
"He's a wide receiver who can really run. We believe he has the body frame to add another 20 lbs or so and still be a dynamic athlete. He's a raw talent but we believe the ceiling is very high for Dakota."
Greenwood High School:
Two-year starter for Greenwood High School in Midland … Started on the offensive line … Participated in the U19 USA All-Star Game.
Coaches say:
"We're excited to have Sloan at Tarleton State University. He's an incredibly hard-working young man with great upside."
Stephenville High School:
Three-year starter for Stephenville … 2017 All-State first team DB … 2017 All-State Big Country second team DB … 2017 Associated Press All-State honorable mention DB … 2017 All-District first team DB … Two-time All-District honorable mention DB … Two-time DQ Player of the Week … Three-time Academic All-District … As a senior, made 49 tackles with six interceptions and two fumble recoveries in 14 games … Also blocked four field goals.
Coaches say:
"Cole is a ball hawk and a very instinctive safety. He is always around the football. We're excited to have him at Tarleton."
Kennedale High School:
Lettered four years in football and was a team captain … Led his team to the 4A state championship game last fall … Three-time All-State … 2014 District Newcomer of the Year … 2017 Academic All-State … Team Defensive MVP.
Coaches say:
"Ector has a knack for the football. He's been very productive for as great program at Kennedale High School. His versatility allows him to play a number of defensive positions, which is very important in today's game."
St. Cloud High School:
Lettered four years and was a team captain for head coach Bryan Smart … ESPN four-star recruit.
Coaches say:
"He's a big receiver and it's wouldn't surprise anyone if he got on campus and turned into one of the most athletic players on the field. We really feel like his upside is incredible."
Carthage High School:
Four-year letterman … Named the Defensive Newcomer of the Year as a freshman … Three-time All-District first team … 2016 District Defensive Player of the Year ... 2016 All-State … 2017 Co-Defensive Player of the Year … 2017 All-State … 4A State Champion in 2017.
Coaches say:
"He's a great football player with incredible instincts. He was a highly productive player out of high school. He's physical and comes from a tremendous program at Carthage."
Weatherford High School:
2017 All-District first team RB … Academic All-District … Academic All-State honorable mention … Rushed for 789 yards and nine touchdowns in four games … Made over 200 career tackles … six forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries … 2016 All-District first team LB.
Coaches say:
"He's a two-way athlete that played very well on both sides of the ball. He's a very smart player and knows the game of football. He's a tough kid and has a great football IQ. He reminds us of Cody Burtscher out of high school."
Teague High School:
Lettered four years in football … Academic All-State … Super CenTex first team … District MVP … 2017 All-District first team RB … Academic All-District … Led his team to three district championships.
Coaches say:
"Tayvis is just explosive. He has great vision and footwork. He has a great ability to make people miss. We're excited to see how he develops when he arrives on campus and how he can help us moving forward."
Weslaco High School:
Lettered three years for Weslaco High School … Also lettered two years in track and field.
Coaches say:
"Rawley is very competitive and always plays through the whistle. He has very athletic feet and a huge upside."
Wimberley High School:
Lettered three years … Four-sport letterman … Defensive MVP of the district as a senior … All-State honorable mention … All-CenTex first team … Central Texas' leading tackler in 2017 with 197 tackles … Led his team to the state semifinals and a district championship in 2017.
Coaches say:
"Matt is a student of the game, which carries onto the field. He's a highly productive player on both sides of the ball. He's a tough kid with a strong desire to win. He has a good body frame and is the type of kid who won't allow himself to be outworked."
McGregor High School:
All-District second team K … Waco Tribune first team … Super CenTex Punter … Padilla Poll 3A All-State second team K … In his senior season, Martinez went 7-10 with a long of 43 on field goals … He was 30-30 on PATs and had 19 punts for a 38.7 yard average … He had eight punts pinned inside the 20-yard line.
Coaches say:
"Joanly possess a great skill set for field goals and kickoffs. His experience for kicking off the ground will translate to the college game much smoother than most kickers. His accuracy and leg strength are things we're mostly excited to see."
Cypress Ridge High School:
Academic All-State … Team Captain … All-District honorable mention … Caught 13 passes on 13 opportunities for 12.3 yards per play … He also lettered and was a honorable mention athlete in basketball.
Coaches say:
"Sloan is a big and athletic tight end that possesses the ability to help us in both the pass and run game. He is also an exceptional student and brings great football knowledge to the table."
Tomball Memorial High School:
Started every game at center and was a team captain in 2017 … Team Offensive Lineman of the Year … Team 'Trench Warrior' of the week … Academic All-State … All-District … Competed in the Blue-Gray All-American Game.
Coaches say:
"Trojanowsky is not only a great football player but is an exceptional human being. His drive and willingness to better himself will pay huge dividends in his ability to help us on the offensive line. He is strong, quick, and plays with great leverage."
Cypress Lakes High School:
Played multiple secondary positions throughout career … Two-time All-District honorable mention … In his senior season, had 54 tackles, four interceptions, and 14 pass breakups.
"Julian is a long corner that has also had experience playing safety. He's a smart football player that truly loves the game. He also has great ball skills."
Cypress Lakes High School:
All-District first team … As a senior, finished with 50 receptions for 563 yards and six touchdowns … In the return game, Solomon averaged 25.0 yards per punt return.
Coaches say:
"Ted is a big, physical wide receiver that did a little bit of everything for his high school team. He's deceptively fast with good hands. His speed and strength should give him the opportunity to come in and make an immediate impact."
Cypress Ridge High School:
As a senior, made 26 tackles with an interception and multiple pass breakups … Also competed in track.
Coaches say:
"Kaylon brings true speed to the secondary. He's a track athlete that runs the open 200m and long jumps. That athleticism shows up on the football field with great tenacity to tackle and attack the ball."
McNeil High School:
2017 All-District first team … 2016 All-District second team ... Team Captain … 2017 Team Offensive Lineman of the Year.
Coaches say:
"Eric is very versatile and can play multiple positions across the offensive line. He's very athletic and has great feet. He's a finisher and will be very competitive in the LSC."
Manor High School:
All-District second team … Also competed in basketball.
Coaches say:
"Prince is very long and athletic for an offensive tackle. He was one of the top basketball recruits in the state of Texas and has only played one year of football. He has incredible upside to really be a force in the LSC."
YML Academy:
District MVP … Academic All-State … National Junior Honor Society.
"Draylon is an explosive receiver who has the ability to put the ball in the end zone every time he touches the ball."
Gainesville High School:
Two-time All-District first team … All-Texoma Land second team … Also an all-district first team selection in basketball.
Coaches say:
"Josh is an all-around athlete that has the potential to be a special defensive back for us."
Wimberley High School:
Two-year letterman … Was a team captain … Led his team to the 2017 state semifinals with a 13-2 record … 2017 All-District first team OL … Academic all-district … 94 pancakes as a senior … Voted team's best offensive lineman and hardest worker.
Coaches say:
"Hunter is a very hard-working athlete that plays through the whistle. He's very strong and tenacious, which will help him succeed in the Lone Star Conference."
Atascocita High School:
Lettered three years in football … Also lettered in track and field … Led his team to 2017 district championship and the 2016 regional semifinals … Two-time All-District first team OL … THSCA Academic All-State honorable mention … Son of Tarleton Hall of Famer and former NFL player, James Dearth.
Coaches say:
"Kendall is a very big, athletic young man who can play multiple positions on the offensive line. He is athletic enough to pull on power and counter but can also dig somebody out, if needed."
Dawson High School:
2017 All-District first team … 2016 All-District second team.
Coaches say:
"Eddie Scott is a very physical presence on the offensive line. He loves to finish his blocks and does it with authority. He can play multiple positions across the line and is athletic enough to do so."
Belton High School:
Team Defensive Scout Award winner … 2016 All-District honorable mention … 2017 All-District second team … Competed in the FCA Victory Bowl … Team Defensive MVP … Led the team in fumble recoveries and forced fumbles as a senior.
Coaches say:
"Clayton is a high-motor defensive end that is constantly disruptive and hard-nosed."
Manor High School:
2017 All-District WR … As a senior, had 32 catches for 696 yards and seven touchdowns … Averaged 21.8 yards per catch.
Coaches say:
"Latremont is a great athlete that's going to add tremendous depth to our tight end position. He's a physical kid that is hard to bring down. He also catches the ball really well."
Wimberley High School:
Lettered four years in football … Also lettered three years in track and field … Led his team to a quarterfinal championship in 2017 … 2017 All-District first team RB … 2017 All-District first team LB … All-CenTex third team utility … Academic all-district.
Coaches say:
"Thomas is a very athletic workhorse. His versatility will be a tremendous asset to our football team, but no matter where he plays, we're confident that he will be a playmaker for us."
Arlington Seguin High School:
Two-time All-District … District champion in shot put and discus as a member of the track and field team … Regional qualifier in discus for the track and field team.
Coaches say:
"Nolan is a dynamic defensive lineman who has the ability to take over a football game."
Maypearl High School:
Two-year starter … Two-time All-District first team RB and Safety … Two-time Academic All-District … As a senior, carried the ball 139 times for 1,231 yards and 24 touchdowns while making three catches for 71 yards and two scores … As a junior … Played in 10 games and rushed 101 times for 884 yards and eight touchdowns.
Coaches say:
"Jagger can just flat out play football. He was incredibly productive at Maypearl High School and is a guy who can potentially play in all three phases of the game for us."
McKinney High School:
Lettered three years and was a team captain … 2017 All-District.
Coaches say:
"Troydell is a big receiver with great speed and a great body frame. He is a dynamic talent that has the ability to make a big play every time he touches the ball. He has great hands and has the potential to give DBs trouble in every aspect of the game."
Life School Oak Cliff:
Lettered three years and was a team captain in football … Also lettered in track and field … Two-time All-State in track and field … 2016 All-District second team in football … Holds the school record in the 4x100m relay and 4x200m relay … Was a state qualifier in 2016 and a state champion in the 4x200m relay as a senior.
"JaQuan is fast. He is a dynamic athlete that can score any time he touches the ball. He is another guy with the potential to contribute early on in his career, potentially in all three phases of the game."
Killeen Ellison High School:
Lettered three years … Two-time Academic All-District … Three-time All-District first team … Two-time team captain … Helped his team to its first playoff appearance since the 1990s.
Coaches say:
"We're excited about Kipshawn because brings a lot of speed and excellent ball skills. We can use him in a variety of ways within our defensive system."
Arlington Seguin High School:
Three-year starter … Was a 2017 district champion in track and field … Also competed in AAU basketball for two years … 130 tackles over the last two seasons, including 18 for a loss and seven sacks … 2016 All-District second team.
Coaches say:
"Deshawn is a long-bodied kid who can run sideline-to-sideline and has a versatile skill set that allows him to play inside or out."
Robert E. Lee High School:
Lettered four years and was a team captain for head coach Kurt Traylor … Three-time All-District first team … 2016 All-State honorable mention … 2017 Defensive MVP … As a senior, made 70 tackles, including seven sacks, to go along with 31 QB hurries, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.
Coaches say:
"Nathan is a high-motor kid who always has his nose to the football. He'll bring a strong work ethic to our team and we're thrilled to have him here."
Rowlett High School:
Lettered two years … Two-time All-District first team … Also threw shotput and discus for the track and field team.
Coaches say:
"Reuben is a finisher. He's very aggressive at the point of attack and has great pad level."
Cedar Ridge High School:
2016 Defensive Newcomer of the Year … 2017 All-District first team.
Coaches say:
"Jaimon has great speed with the ability to cover sideline-to-sideline. Has great hips to pass drop. He's has a lot of physical similarities to Basil Jackson."
