WT - Practice Updates

WT boasts size on lines

Defense snares four interceptions in 2nd half
By Greg Jaklewicz

Size matters on the offensive and defensive lines, and West Texas A&M has plenty of that. For example, newcomer J'Marcus Webb goes 6-foot-8, 320 pounds and wears a size 22 shoe.

The game plan this season is to wear down opponents by rotating players in and winning the battle on the lines.

"We want to dominate," All-American defensive end Brandon Swain said.

WT again wants to hear comments similar to those made by South Dakota players in last year's season-opener. In the second half, on their way to a 55-45 win, Buffs players on the field were asked, "Don't you guys ever get tired?"

"We want to wear people down," said offensive lineman Brad McCarty, the former Amarillo High standout. "That's our goal."

Buffs score six times in scrimmage

The West Texas A&M offense didn't have it easy Saturday, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Avoiding the rain but playing on squishy field that felt more like a sponge rather than artificial turf, the Buffs offense had to work for its four touchdowns and pair of field goals against a defense that coaches believe again will be the best in the Lone Star Conference.

"The execution was good," WT head coach Don Carthel said.

Carthel said he liked how his quarterbacks dropped off screen passes and avoided the rush, which WT hopes is its defensive calling card.
