Buffs again play role of underdog vs. ACU

Don Carthel likes the underdog's role.

Correction. He lives by it.

Taking the West Texas A&M football job was perfect for Carthel, who led underdog Eastern New Mexico to the 1991 Lone Star Conference championship. WT certainly was an underdog, having gone 5-27 the three seasons before he arrived in Canyon in 2005.

After two weeks of being in the Lone Star Conference spotlight, the Midwestern State Mustangs won’t be involved in the “Game of the Week” this Saturday.

That honor belongs to Abilene Christian and West Texas A&M as the contest will also have regional and national implications.

Harvey Martin Classic keeps Texas A&M-Commerce very busy this week

COMMERCE — This is a big week for Texas A&M University-Commerce’s football program and athletic department.
The Lions will honor the memory of former East Texas State University and Dallas Cowboy great Harvey Martin during the Harvey Martin Classic set for a 2 p.m. kickoff on Saturday at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The A&M-Commerce football team is making its first return to the Cotton Bowl since 1977 as the Lions take on East Central of Oklahoma. The State Fair of Texas will provide a lively background for the two Lone Star Conference North Division teams.
