Buffs' Null, Abilene Christian's Malone the engines that drive two of the top offenses in Division II football

They are the Tom Brady and Peyton Manning of the Lone Star Conference.

Both are seniors. Both have beards, neither particularly bushy.

One is 6-foot-4, 220 pounds; the other is 6-3, 230. Their stats are similar: both complete 68 percent of their throws.

Regular-season games don't come much bigger than this. Abilene Christian University, ranked No. 3 in the nation in Division II football, takes on No. 4-ranked West Texas A&M University in a battle of unbeatens at 6 p.m. Saturday in Canyon.

Not only is it a battle between two top-ranked teams, but the game will likely decide the Lone Star Conference title -- certainly the LSC South Division.

Mustangs stumbling again after solid start

Midwestern State finds itself in this position for the fourth straight season: A promising start thwarted by successive losses to nationally ranked West Texas A&M and Tarleton State.

The Mustangs, who travel to Texas A&M-Kingsville for Saturday's Lone Star Conference South Division matchup, haven't had their postseason or conference hopes totally quashed, but the task has grown tougher after falling out of the NCAA Division II Super Region Four rankings from No. 6. That makes winning their final four regular-season ballgames -- starting with the Javelinas and ending with third-ranked Abilene Christian -- essential.

Davis making most of season of change

This has been a season of change for Midwestern State wide receiver Mookie Davis — and not all of it has worked out real well for the former Rider Raider.

A new offensive coordinator, new quarterbacks and new variations to the offense as well as different pass routes have added up to just eight catches for 62 yards so far this season for the 5-7, 164-pound senior.

ASU football team looks to bounce back against SE Oklahoma at home Saturday

The Angelo State University football team can sympathize with Southeastern Oklahoma - and vice versa.

The two Lone Star Conference rivals - that have met only four times in the history of both schools - enter Saturday's contest at San Angelo Stadium in similar situations.

A&M-Commerce facing tough quarterback

Texas A&M University-Commerce could probably use another pass rusher like Harvey Martin when the Lions take on East Central University and its quarterback Marcus Johnson on Saturday.

The Harvey Martin Classic, named for the former East Texas State University (now A&M-Commerce) and Dallas Cowboys’ standout, is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
