LSC Roundup 3-19

NCAA Basketball Championship

Gholson: St. Cloud plays its own style of hoops
Every college basketball court in this country is 94 feet long and 50 feet wide.

The goals are all 10 feet high.

But Kevin Schlagel — the head coach at St. Cloud State University — insists that the basketball played in Minnesota is different than what he sees in other parts of the country.

When he talks about Matt Schneck, the best player on his team, Schlagel said: “In our area, he is very good, but I don’t know how he would stack up in other parts of the country.”

Then when Schlagel talks about his Huskies — Midwestern State’s opening-round opponent in the Elite Eight next week — he says they are pretty good “at least for our part of the country.”

Yes, I do associate good ice fishing and curling with Minnesota more than I do with good basketball.

But why does the St. Cloud coach — a guy who played at this school and has coached there for 31 years — downplay his own basketball program?
