LSC Roundup 2-16

Mustangs not looking past Javelinas - Times Record News, Nick Gholson
On paper, it looks like an easy win for Midwestern State. Texas A&M-Kingsville is 8-14. MSU is 18-5. Midwestern won by 15 points in Kingsville three weeks ago. The Javelinas have won just three road games all season. The Mustangs have won 40 in a row at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Midwestern is in the running to win a third straight Lone Star Conference championship. The only thing keeping 3-7 Kingsville out of the South Division cellar is 1-10 Abilene Christian.

So, nobody in the MSU basketball program should be sweating tonight when the Javelinas show up for an 8 p.m. tipoff — right?

MSU coach Grant McCasland sees where Kingsville recently lost to West Texas A&M by 14 points at home and then made a 1,340-mile round trip to Canyon three days later and beat WT by five points.

"Coach (Pete) Peterson can really coach. He knows how to put together a game plan to win and showed that in those back-to-back games against West Texas," McCasland said. "He knows how to find an advantage and exploit it. They will be prepared to play us."

MSU looks for better 'D' this time against Javelinas - Times Record News, J. Scott Russell
While the Midwestern State women have won two straight for just the second time this season, the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas are currently in the midst of a five-game losing streak and have lost 12 of their last 13 games.

Unfortunately for the Mustangs, the loneJavelina win in that downward spiral was an 85-65 win over MSU, where it suffered from the home team's rain of 3-pointers.

MSU will try to continue both streaks tonight when the two teams meet in a Lone Star Conference South Division matchup.

Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. in D.L. Ligon Coliseum between the Javelinas (3-19, 1-9) and the Mustangs (8-13, 4-5).
