Four Lone Star Conference standouts were distinguished with the 2012 Lone Star Conference Track & Field Athletes of the Year awards. The honors were announced Tuesday following a vote of the league’s head coaches.
West Texas A&M’s Tommy Curry earned top male track honors, while Abilene Christian’s Nick Jones was the male field honoree. On the women’s side, Angelo State’s Jaylen Rodgers claimed top track acclaim, while WTAMU’s Morgan Shelton earned field honors.
The Buffs Curry picked up three All-American accolades by placing third in the 100m (10.12) and fourth in the 200m (20.51) along with a fourth place finish in the 4x100 relay at the 2012 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Jones, who was a unanimous choice, capped his remarkable Wildcat career by claiming his fifth national championship and setting a NCAA history in the process. He won the discus for the fourth time in his career, becoming the first male athlete in NCAA history (regardless of division) and only the second athlete in NCAA history to accomplish the feat. Jones, who will compete in the US Olympic Trials in July, best discus throw of the season – 203 feet, 3 inches at the UTEP Invitational – makes him the third-best performer in NCAA Division II history and the mark is the best collegiate mark in the country in 2012, regardless of division.
Rodgers turned in an incredible performance with a second-place finish in the 800m at the national meet to earn her first All-American honor for the Rambelles. Her time of 2:11.60 is the fifth-fastest time in ASU history.
Shelton finished fifth in the heptathlon with a total score of 5,169 points to earn All-American honors for the Lady Buffs. She won the javelin throw (125-9), placed fourth in the 800m (2:23.05) and 200m (25.48) and fifth in the long jump (18-5.75) in her first multi-event competition at the NCAA Championships.
